Local law enforcement departments are warning residents to be wary of leaving their vehicles running unattended lest criminals take advantage of having a nice warm car to steal before the owner can return to it.

HILLSIDE — A proposal by Mayor Joseph Menza to restructure the police and fire departments to avoid layoffs has not been well received by public safety officials who fear it could imperil residents and first responders.
Menza said his plan, which he hopes to present within the next week, could cut $1.5 million from the township’s $42 million budget and help reduce a $3.2 million deficit while avoiding the need for layoffs.
